Why You Need a LinkedIn Profile

LinkedIn Profile Optimisation

LinkedIn was launched in 2003 and has since grown to become the ‘World’s Largest Professional Network’, so it could be time to start using the platform to propel your own career.

As a social network, it acts similar to Facebook with your profile, engaging in groups, connecting with other professionals and joining discussions. But, many professionals neglect their profile and miss the opportunities that it can bring, especially now.

Why You Should Use LinkedIn

LinkedIn acts as a portfolio for your latest achievements, previous work history and who you are as a professional. Not only does it help to bridge any gaps highlighted in your CV, it acts as a forum to be more like yourself. While the CV is used strategically to bring focus on what adds value, LinkedIn is more approachable.

You’re able to Add as Much or as Little Information as You Like

Much like a CV, there isn’t one ‘perfect’ formula for writing your LinkedIn profile. Over time you will see your own profile evolve based on what you like from other professionals in your network. You can write a long summary with short descriptions under your work experience. Remember that LinkedIn is an online platform, so including some keywords throughout your profile will help you get noticed.

You can add Publications, Projects or Courses

Depending on the professional, you may have a list of achievements that you may not have been able to elaborate further in your CV, or maybe didn’t have the space to include in your CV. Make sure to optimise your profile to really bring focus to your accomplishments. Don’t forget! LinkedIn also allows you to add media (links, pictures, websites), so make it punchy with more visual elements.

Showoff Your Creativity

LinkedIn has the ability to add little graphics in your profile, so make yours stand out with quirky checkmarks, icons or fancy dividing lines in your headline.

What to Remember

LinkedIn allows you to express yourself in ways that a CV can’t. To maximise the impact of your profile, make sure to have a Headline, About, Experience, Education and Skills (essentially the same elements needed for a CV).
